There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this suspension will be appealed. Josh Beckett did absolutely nothing to warrant a suspension.
Boston pitcher Josh Beckett has been suspended for six games and fined by Major League Baseball, which determined he intentionally threw a pitch near the head of the Los Angeles Angels' Bobby Abreu last week. Beckett also was cited for "aggressive actions" after the pitch that led to the benches clearing Sunday, according to Bob Watson, vice president for discipline in the commissioner's office.
Moving aggressively towards Abreu, and inciting both benches to empty doesn't warrant a suspension in your mind? Had Abreu gone towards the mound, he certainly would have been suspended. I think you're viewing the incident through RedSox colored glasses.
I'm a Yankees fan! He didn't move aggressively towards Abreu until he moved aggressively towards him. Certainly there are several examples of more aggressive behavior from the Angels. Perhaps you're looking through LA-LA colored glasses.
sorry jon, i'm a big fan of yours but imo nothing abreu did was incendiary - it was a completely normal and acceptable reaction...beckett could have diffused the entire situation by motioning "my bad" with his body language - instead his true punk colors emerged. if i were on that team after what they've been through i would have snapped - credit to them for the situation not escalating far further than it did.
Thanks Zengarf, you bring up an interesting point that I hadn't considered. The Angels were probably more (for lack of a better term) "highly strung" coming into the game. I'll concede that Beckett did not make it any easier. I still don't believe his actions warranted a suspension. For the record, I didn't think Torri Hunter or any of the others should have been ejected for basically yelling and screaming. But I guess I've always been a bit more tolerant of confrontations that don't result in any punches thrown. Growing up in the projects and with five brothers and sisters with attitude will do that.
