Today's Moves:
The Chicago Cubs signed free-agent catcher Henry Blanco to a two year $5.5 million contract with a mutual option for the 2009 season. Why the Cubs are spending this much on an all field no-hit back-up catcher is far beyond me. I'm sure there will be much more before the day is out.

Reports I've heard indicate it will be 2 years 18 million for the Big Hurt.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm hearing the same report now. $10 million in the first year, $8 million in the second with an option year worth another $10 million. Maybe the buyout for the option year is $5 million which would make those two years worth 23 but that's just a guess. Thanks for the update though.

Well, I wouldn't have done it. But that doesn't mean it isn't a potentially good move. I probably would have gone with Adam Lind and signed a David Dellucci type as insurance. But if Thomas is healthy he makes it a lot tougher to pitch around Wells and Glaus. He does clog up the bases, no question on that.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Lind looks like he is ready, and, with Jays fav Reed Johnson in LF, DH was the only place for Lind to get regular ABs.
ReplyDeleteSomehow, JP signing Billy Beane's $500K gambles to $18MM contracts seems to hint at incompetence.
Not that the world isn't filled with copycat management.
The move I'd really like to see from the Blue Jays is Dutin McGowan in the rotation and left alone for a year. Probably won't happen but I think they would be quite happy if they did. Ricciardi has definitely disappointed as far as player development goes.
